Human Performance for Defence: From Frameworks to Daily Practice
Human Performance for Defence brings physical capacity, health, recovery and other relevant factors together to support the demands of military service. However, putting this into practice means following these factors consistently, across individuals and groups.
To support this, Work-Out provides configurable software. Your organisation decides what matters, how it is assessed and how the multidisciplinary team uses the information.
The domains of Human Performance
Human Performance extends beyond physical fitness. Total Force Fitness (TFF) offers a military framework with eight interconnected domains:
- Physical: strength, endurance, agility and mobility.
- Medical and dental: health assessments, screening and preventive care.
- Psychological: mental resilience, cognitive function, clear thinking and coping.
- Nutritional: food quality, access and mission-specific nutritional needs.
- Social: supportive relationships, leadership and unit cohesion.
- Environmental: heat, cold, altitude, noise and air quality.
- Spiritual: values, purpose, identity and belonging.
- Financial: money management and financial preparedness.
These domains work together rather than as sequential stages. For example, sleep and recovery can affect several at once. In this TFF description, cognitive and mental factors sit within the psychological domain.
In practice, domains provide the structure, while parameters make follow-up concrete. Your team chooses the relevant measures, assessments and observations, then decides how they inform support and readiness. However, a framework does not require every factor to become a score.
Your organisation defines readiness
How healthy is this person? How fit are they? How ready are they for their role or the task ahead? Although these questions are related, each needs its own assessment.
Work-Out lets your organisation choose the parameters it wants to monitor and how heavily they contribute to its readiness assessment. As a result, the platform supports your approach rather than imposing one fixed model.
For example, if sleep matters to your assessment, include it and assign its weight. If you do not want it included, switch it off. The same principle lets you shape the assessment around the factors your team considers relevant.
One picture. Different expertise.
Physical training instructors, medical professionals, physiotherapists, psychologists and nutrition specialists each see a different part of the Human Performance picture.
By bringing relevant information and follow-up into one environment, Work-Out connects these perspectives. Access is configured by role, so specialists can coordinate support within their own responsibilities.
In addition, the platform supports both individual and group views. Your organisation defines the criteria and how group readiness is assessed. A score helps organise the picture. However, interpreting it still requires professional judgement.
Built around your way of working
A Human Performance framework gives direction. To put it to work, teams need to collect relevant information, interpret it together and track what happens next.
Research and studies can inform your methods, while your organisation determines the working model. Work-Out then supplies the software to organise parameters, assessments, roles and follow-up around it.
That flexibility goes together with control over sensitive Human Performance data: who can access it, where it is processed and how it is used.
